A Short History on Medieval Swords - The swords of medieval Europe (approximately 500 to 1500 AD) evolved from steel Celtic swords, which in turn arose from a tradition of straight, double-edged swords which began with bronze swords as early as 1,500 BC. At the opening of the Middle Ages these swords tended to have blades just under a yard in length with a grip designed to accommodate a single hand; the other hand being concerned with the grip of a shield. By the close of the Middle Ages, swords increasingly are stouter and more sharply pointed, being optimized for the thrust, the cut having been rendered less effective by improvements in armour. Similarly, with these armour improvements, the shield became redundant and swords with hilts effectively accommodating both hands make their appearance and grow in popularity.
Many medieval sword collectors and re-enactors find themselves drawn to a distinct period of time. Some even go as far as developing an in depth persona...where they were born, what battles they fought in, and what kings they served under. To help those driven by a desire to firmly develop a persona or add to a sword collection from a specific time/century during the European Medieval era we have broken our swords down by century. All brands are lumped together to create a convenient way to find a sword from your century - 12th and 13th century, 14th century , 15th century , and 16th century . If you have any sword suggestions or additions please feel free to contact us. All the swords in this section are functional, battle-ready, and "real" swords. Definition of a "real" sword: swords that are forged high carbon spring steel. Please be aware that the term battle ready can often be confusing. A battle ready sword can be either sharp or dull as long as it is properly forged out of quality high carbon spring steel. Sharp swords are suitable for practice cutting, but not blade on blade contact. Blunt swords are designed for stage combat/or re-enactment and can be struck blade on blade.
As re-enactors we realize it takes more than a sword to complete a kit. That is why we offer a range of products (clothing, medieval armor, shields, and leather accessories) to help our customers achieve this end. Our medieval clothing is well made and will stand up to day to day wear and tear, and with with heavy use in mind we only offer quality medieval and renaissance clothing. As well as belts, baldrics, bracers, and other leather accessories.
Another aspect of the historical and fantasy game is the ability to enter combat without injury. For this we offer an excellent line of Live Action Role Playing (LARP) swords, weapons, shields, axes, maces, and accessories. Our Warlords line of latex LARP weapons have a realistic look and finish and are some of the finest on the market. A hard rubber handle and real suede wrapping ensures both great balance and a firm grip for complete control. Having personally used these LARP weapons we can say they hold up very well and will add to both medieval and fantasy live action role playing.
For those training in Western Martial Arts (WMA) or conducting stage combat we offer a limited, but quality range of blunt trainers/stage swords. Over the years we have supplied colleges, schools, and theatrical groups with the swords, clothing, and armor required to put on quality and safe stage combat performances.
